How to Look After Your Rope Belt (and Bracelet)
Share
Someone asked me at a market last week how to wash their rope belt. Then they looked a wee bit embarrassed, like it was a daft question. It is not. It is a brilliant question, and the answer is one of my favourite things about this material.
Your belt used to be a climbing rope. It got dragged up walls, stood on, rained on, and loaded with falling humans for years. A trip through your washing routine is nothing to it.
Why this stuff lasts so long
Climbing rope is nylon, and nylon takes hundreds of years to break down. That is exactly why it is a landfill nightmare, and exactly why it makes cracking gear. The same stubbornness that makes it a problem in a bin makes it built to outlast anything from a big-box store on your waist.
So the care guide is short. This material does not need babying. It just needs a few sensible habits.
How to clean a climbing rope belt
Most of the time, a wipe with a damp cloth is all it needs. For a proper clean, use lukewarm water and a little mild soap, work it gently along the rope, rinse well, and let it air dry flat. Same goes for bracelets. That is honestly it.
The one thing to avoid is heat. Tumble dryers, radiators, direct summer sun for days on end. Nylon shrugs off dirt and water, but it does not love being cooked. Let it dry on its own and it will keep its shape and colour for years.
Buy once, wear it daft amounts
This is the quiet argument for gear with a story. A recycled climbing rope belt from £25, made to your exact waist size, is not a thing you replace every year. Same with a rope bracelet made to your wrist size for £12. Treat them right and they just keep going.
And if you know a climber who is rough on their kit, that is half the fun of gifts for climbers made from retired rope. They genuinely cannot destroy it. Many have tried.
Gear that refuses to quit
Every piece is handmade in Aberdeen from rope that already survived years on the wall.
