A walker on a path in the Scottish Highlands with mountains behind

Gifts For Hillwalkers: They Already Own All The Kit

Here is the problem with buying a present for a hillwalker. They already own everything, they researched all of it for about six weeks before buying, and they will happily explain why the one you just bought them is the wrong one.

Do not buy them a head torch. Do not buy them socks. Definitely do not buy them a waterproof.

The Munro list runs to 282 hills. Somebody chipping away at that has been given a lot of gear over the years and has strong feelings about all of it.

Buy for after the hill, not for on it

This is the trick. Anything technical, they have chosen already and you will get it wrong. Anything for the drive home, the flat, the pub or the everyday, and you are in clear air.

I make things out of climbing rope that has been retired, which is a funny fit for hillwalking. Most walkers never touch a rope. But they know exactly what one is, they know what it is for, and handing them something made from one that has already caught somebody lands better than another pair of gloves.

Gifts for hillwalkers and Munro baggers

Cup cosy and can cooler, £30. The best one on this list for a walker. A hot flask cup on a summit in February, a cold tin in the car park after. It does both.

Rope belt, £28 or £33. Made to exact waist, 22 to 50 inches. Nylon does not care about rain, which is the whole personality of walking in Scotland. Recycled climbing rope belts.

Rope coasters, £4. For the map table, or the corner of the sofa where the tea goes. Have a look.

Rope bracelet, £10. Made to their wrist. Light, bright, and it survives being sat on. Rope bracelets.

Keychains, £3 to £15. Car keys for a hillwalker live a hard life. The keychains are here.

Rope bowl, £55. By the door, for keys, compass, and the receipt from the chip shop in Braemar. Three left.

The Scottish bit

All of it is made by hand in Aberdeen, an hour or so from the Cairngorms. The rope comes from climbing walls around the UK who put it aside for me instead of skipping it. In January 2026 alone that was over 5 km of it kept out of the ground.

So it is a Scottish made present with a story attached, which beats something flown in and shrink wrapped.

No head torches in here, promise

Handmade in Aberdeen from rope that has done its last climb.
