The Person Holding Your Rope Deserves Better Than a Pint
Share
Think about the last hard route you got up. Now think about the person stood at the bottom.
They were there for two hours. They fed you slack when you needed it and locked off when you did not. They caught the fall you took on the crux and shouted something daft to get you back on. They probably held your water bottle as well.
And what did they get out of it? A "cheers mate" in the car park. Maybe a pint if you remembered your wallet.
I have been on both sides of that rope for years and I still think we get this wrong. So this one is for the belayers.
Why gifts for climbing partners are so hard
Climbers are a nightmare to buy for. They already own the shoes they want. They have strong opinions on chalk. Buy them a harness and you will get a polite face and a quiet return.
So most of us give up and buy a mug with a mountain on it. It sits in the cupboard. Nobody wins.
The trick is to stop shopping for the sport and start shopping for the person. Your belay partner does not need more gear. They need something small that says "I noticed."
That is the whole reason I make what I make. Every bit of it started life as a rope that held somebody up a wall. Ropes get retired after five to ten years even when they look perfect, because the core wears out where you cannot see it. Perfectly good nylon, binned, hundreds of years to break down. So I go and get it from climbing walls around the UK and turn it into stuff people actually use.
A keychain made from a rope that caught real falls is a better gift than a mug. It just is.
What I would actually give my belay partner
Here is the honest ladder, cheapest first. No upsell nonsense. Pick the rung that matches how many falls they caught.
Under a fiver, a recycled climbing rope keychain does the job. It goes on their car keys and they see it every single day. Small thing, big reminder.
Around a tenner, go for a rope bracelet made to their wrist size. Message me the measurement and I will build it to fit properly, which is the bit most shops skip.
If they have caught a lot of your falls, a recycled climbing rope belt is the one. Made to their exact waist, anywhere from 22 inches to 50 inches. Built to outlast anything from a big-box store.
And if you have no idea what they would pick, that is fine. A Forma gift card starts at £10 and lands in their inbox in seconds. Not lazy. Just honest.
A wee word about the pint
I am not saying stop buying the pint. Buy the pint. The pint is sacred.
I am saying the pint is gone by nine o'clock. A keychain cut from the rope they were literally holding is still on their bag in three years.
That is the whole idea behind Forma. Not "recycled" as a label to feel good about. Gear with a story, made by one bloke in Aberdeen, from rope that already did the most important job there is.
