Eight bottle lids in. One coaster out. Nothing to landfill.

Every recycled plastic coaster is made by hand in the workshop from around eight reclaimed bottle lids. They get collected, sorted by colour, cleaned, shredded, then heat pressed into one solid marbled hexagon. The plastic swirls as it melts, so the one you get is the only one that will ever look like that.

Bottle lids are one of the most common bits of plastic waste and one of the least likely to actually get recycled. They are too small for most kerbside sorting machines, so they end up in landfill or in the sea. We collect them, clean them and turn them into something you will actually keep.

The details

  • Shape and size: hexagon, roughly 10cm (4 inches) across
  • Colourways: Midnight, Granite or Rockpool
  • Buy as: a single coaster, or a set of four in one colourway
  • Materials: recycled HDPE plastic, natural cork base
  • Made: by hand in Scotland
  • Care: wipe clean with a damp cloth, not dishwasher safe
  • In the box: one coaster, or four if you pick the set

The three colourways

  • Midnight is deep purple-blue with darker swirls running through it, like a night sky reflected on water. My favourite.
  • Granite is crisp black and white, speckled and sharp. Goes with everything.
  • Rockpool is blue and white, all sea foam and shoreline. Bright and coastal.

Questions people ask

Why a hexagon and not a round coaster?
Hexagons sit together without gaps, so a set of four looks tidy on the table instead of leaving awkward gaps between them. It also gives you a flat edge to pick the coaster up by.

Will mine look the same as the photo?
Close, but not identical. Each one is pressed by hand and the recycled plastic swirls differently every time, so the pattern will vary a little from the picture. That is the whole charm of it.

Can I put a hot mug on it?
Yes, a hot mug is absolutely fine. A hot pan straight off the hob is not. Keep it away from direct heat and it will last for years.

How do the sets work, and can I mix the colours?
Choose Set of 4 above and you get four coasters in the one colourway for £30, which saves you £2 on buying them one at a time. If you would rather mix them up, add four singles to your basket in whatever colours you fancy. Either way they arrive together in one parcel.

Will it scratch my table?
No. The base is natural cork, which grips the table and protects the surface underneath.

What plastic is it and where does it come from?
It is HDPE, the plastic used for bottle lids and milk carton caps. It comes from lids collected and handed in locally, then washed and shredded here before pressing.

How do I clean it?
A damp cloth is all it needs. Do not put it in the dishwasher, as the heat will soften the plastic and spoil the surface.

Packaging: it comes in kraft card packaging you can recycle. Small orders are posted in a compostable mailer bag. To be straight with you, that bag is compostable plastic and needs an industrial composting facility, not a home compost bin. Bigger orders go out in cardboard boxes reused from a local logistics company.
